Sloppy Joe's

-And NOT the bar in Key West.
Although Hemingway did used to frequent it.

We had sloppy joe's for dinner last night. Sweet sloppy joe's because of my lack of attention to detail (2 scoops of brown sugar or 1, who can remember?). At any rate, the recipe is super simple and more than likely, you already have all the ingredients in your kitchen/pantry.

Sloppy Joe's:
  • 1/2lb of whatever your protein preference is (ground beef, turkey, chicken, veggie ground round...)
  • diced onion (I cut 2 slices and chopped them up - we like onion here. It's up to you)
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • little bit of water (a tablespoon or 2)
  • 1tsp mustard (or a little more)
  • a couple swishes of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar (or if you'd like them sweet, feel free to add two like I did accidentally on purpose)
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • a couple dashes of chili powder
  • salt to taste

Brown your meet/veggie ground round with the diced onions (you can throw green peppers in here too, but I prefer mine without). Once browned, drain if necessary and add the rest of the ingredients. Bring it to a boil and then simmer on low heat for 30 minutes or so. Then they're ready to go!

We had ours on homemade bread (and incase you were curious like me, those hamburger buns will cook as a loaf of bread, but the texture is a little off. Stick with the buns, and use the honey wheat bread instead. MUCH better) and they were very much enjoyed. Extra sugar and all.

Now, I have a much dreaded appointment with an out of control linen closet. Happy Thursday!
